Apple Pie Braided (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ Filling

01 - 2½ pounds apples, sliced after peeling and removing cores (~4-5 big ones)
02 - 2 Tbsp butter (unsalted)
03 - ½ tsp allspice powder
04 - ¼ cup packed brown sugar
05 - 1 tsp cinnamon
06 - ½ cup sugar (white, granulated)
07 - ¼ tsp salt
08 - 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
09 - 2 Tbsp plain flour
10 - ¼ tsp ground ginger
11 - 2 Tbsp cornstarch

→ Dough and Topping

12 - Vanilla ice cream for serving (optional)
13 - 2 Tbsp coarse sugar (turbinado or sanding)
14 - One large egg mixed with 1 Tbsp water
15 - One box (14.1 oz.) of store-bought pie crust (2 sheets included)

# Instructions:

01 - Melt butter in a big skillet, mix in sliced apples, both sugars, and the spices. Keep stirring until the apples soften up. Sprinkle flour and cornstarch over it, then stir until thick. Turn off heat, add the lemon juice, and let it cool fully.
02 - Stack the pie crust sheets, then roll them into a roughly 11-inch by 18-inch rectangle. Spread the cooled filling evenly across the dough.
03 - Roll the dough up tightly into a log shape. Slice it down the middle lengthwise, then twist both pieces together, cut sides facing out.
04 - Brush the dough with the egg wash, toss some coarse sugar on top, and bake it in a 375°F oven for 18-20 minutes, or until golden.

# Notes:

01 - The best apple choices: Braeburn, Honeycrisp, Jonagold, or Granny Smith
02 - You'll get the richest flavor by mixing a few apple varieties
