This lasagna amps things up with spicy sausage, slow-cooked meat sauce, and layers of gooey cheeses. It’s great for feeding a crowd—serving 10 comfortably. Though it requires 70 minutes of prep, the oven magic makes it worth the wait. Once it’s bubbly and hot, don’t expect leftovers because everyone will want seconds!

Whenever I take this lasagna out of the oven and watch the cheese turn golden brown with those perfect bubbles, I can't help but remember how it got its fancy title. The truth? It's so darn rich and creamy that during a family meal, someone blurted out it was "worth a million bucks" - and the name just stuck around. This homemade dish has become what I cook for all our special moments, blending three fantastic cheeses with a sauce that makes your home smell like you've brought Italy into your kitchen.

Just last weekend, my friend Maria popped in right as I was taking one out. After her third helping, she wouldn't leave without the recipe. What's my secret? Taking your sweet time with each layer and never rushing through it.

Your Shopping List

  • Italian Sausage: Splurge on quality meat here. It really changes everything
  • Cream Cheese: Leave it out for a couple hours to soften. Makes mixing way easier, I promise
  • Ricotta Cheese: Don't buy low-fat if you want that super creamy texture
  • Mozzarella: Buy a block and shred it yourself for better melting
  • Your Sauce Options: Homemade marinara or creamy alfredo both work wonderfully
  • Lasagna Noodles: Try the no-boil type to save time without giving up flavor.

Crafting Your Heavenly Lasagna

Cooking The Base:
My first step is always browning that sausage in my largest skillet. I break it into tiny bits and let it get golden all over - those crispy spots pack tons of flavor. For alfredo fans, you'll whip that up after cooking the meat. If you're team red sauce, just pour your marinara into the browned meat and let everything bubble away while you handle the rest.
Creating The Cheese Blend:
This is where things get really good. Blend your soft cream cheese with ricotta until completely smooth. Drop in an egg (it helps everything stay together), some fresh parsley, and a bit of salt and pepper. I always steal a little taste right now - just to check the seasoning, of course!
Building Your Masterpiece:
Always start by spreading a thin sauce layer in your pan - it keeps everything from sticking. Then just build your tasty tower: noodles, meat sauce, that dreamy cheese mix, and mozzarella. Keep stacking until you run out or reach the pan's edge. Save some mozzarella for the very top - that's what gives you that beautiful brown crust everyone fights over.

My little girl Sarah calls this our "weekend lasagna" because she knows I don't rush it - this dish deserves patience!

Plan-Ahead Perks

I often put this together a day early. Just wrap it up good and stick it in the fridge. The flavors actually get better overnight, and it's so nice knowing dinner's already handled. Just cook it about 10-15 minutes longer if it's coming straight from the cold fridge.

Adapting For Any Group

Regular Dinner:
Stick with the basic recipe
Large Gathering:
Cook two versions, one red sauce and one white
Fussy Kids:
Go basic with just cheese and sauce layers
Next-Day Meals:
Gets even tastier after sitting overnight!

Fixing Common Problems

Even though I've made this tons of times, stuff happens: Top getting too dark? Just toss some foil over it. Cheese mix too stiff? Splash in a bit of milk. Torn noodles? Just piece them together - all that cheese will hide it anyway.

Tweaking For Different Events

Family Celebrations:
For holidays, I jazz up my dish with some extras. A handful of torn basil on top, maybe a bit more cheese (because holidays call for extra cheese, right?). It's perfect since you can make it ahead when your kitchen isn't total chaos.
Sports Viewing:
When friends come over for the big game, I sometimes split the recipe between two smaller pans. Keep the second one warm while everyone devours the first. Nothing worse than running out of food before halftime!
Community Dinners:
Whenever there's a gathering at school or church, people always ask if I'm bringing "that amazing pasta dish." I've learned to bring printed recipes - saves me from writing it out for everyone after dinner!

Storage and Extras

Making It Kid-Approved:
My children love helping with this now. They go crazy for spreading the cheese and placing the noodles. Sure, my kitchen gets messy, but these are the cooking moments they'll remember forever!
What To Serve With It:
Hot buttery garlic bread, light green salad, roasted seasonal veggies, extra warm sauce on the side, freshly grated parmesan at the table
Handling Extra Portions:
If you somehow end up with leftovers: Perfect for next day's lunch, transforms into amazing roll-ups, freezes well for up to 3 months, tastes surprisingly good cold (we've all sneaked a midnight bite!)

Shopping Smart: To make things easier: Buy cheese when it's discounted - it freezes great, always keep no-boil noodles in your pantry, splash out on fresh herbs - they really make a difference, good sauce matters - store-bought or homemade.

Time-Saving Tricks

On busy weeks, I get everything ready the night before: mix up the cheese blend, cook the meat and sauce, shred all the cheese. Assembly goes super fast the next day!

The Magic Behind It All: There's something truly special about a dish with layers of rich sauce (whether you pick traditional or alfredo), three kinds of cheese, and perfectly done pasta. Every bite gives you that ideal mix of flavors that just makes everyone happy. It's not only about what goes in - it's about giving each step the attention it needs. Layer by layer, you're creating something that'll bring joy to your table. And isn't that what cooking's really about?

Wrapping It Up

This isn't just another pasta bake - it's the kind of dish that pulls people together. Whether you go for red sauce or creamy white, whether you're feeding your immediate family or trying to wow guests, it always hits the mark. I've made this for new people in the neighborhood, taken it to community dinners, and served it at countless family meals. Each time, watching folks take that first bite and seeing their faces light up makes all the work worthwhile. Because good food isn't just about filling up - it's about making memories around your table that stay with people.

Just remember, great food takes time, but that's part of what makes it special. Turn on some tunes, maybe pour yourself something nice while cooking, and enjoy the process. After all, the care you put into making it is what turns this dish into something truly priceless.

11 1/2 cup of grated parmesan cheese

Instructions

Step 01

Turn on the oven to 375ºF. Boil lasagna pasta based on the box instructions, drain the water, and put it aside.

Step 02

On medium heat, brown the sausage in a pan. Drain extra fat and mix in tomato sauce, marinara sauce, and herbs. Let it simmer for 5-10 minutes till it thickens up.

Step 03

In a bowl, mix together the cottage cheese, softened cream cheese, sour cream, stirred egg, and dried parsley flakes.

Step 04

Grease a 9x13-inch dish. Spread a cup of meat filling at the bottom. Lay down 6 lasagna pieces, making sure they overlap slightly.
